Writing Your Online Dating Profile

One of the most important aspects of Dating Online is Your Personal Profile

By Julian Cowie

The key to succeeding with online dating is to write an excellent online profile. One that stands out, one that will give your prospective future partner, date, a reason to choose you over all the thousands of others.

The most important thing is to be honest about yourself and how you look. Use an up to date photo, the best one you have, or why not have one taken professionally, it's not that expensive and it could greatly increase your chances.

When writing your profile write as you would talk to someone. Write down what you would tell a new friend about yourself. Be yourself and don't make yourself out to be someone you're not. Don't for example try to make yourself seem older or younger than you really are. Speak (write) with your own voice. There is no-one else like you on the planet, you are a one-off truly unique. Let your uniqueness come through.

The language you use should be specific, saying things like “I'm honest, creative, love music and have an interest in Japanese culture” that could mean anything, when what you should say is...I'm honest, love to paint, play the drums and have a black belt in Aikido. Now that shows a totally different picture to what you may have imagined.

What is it that makes you different from everyone else? Do you have a good sense of humour, if you have don't say so, show it by making your profile humorous. Make sure it is humorous and not corny!

Try not to restrict yourself by writing something that will disqualify half the population male or female. Someone might write “I would like to meet someone who earns $500.000.00 a year and drives a blue Ferrari”. Everyone knows Ferraris are Red! Corny, but you know what I mean.

I was at a conference in the Sydney Hilton. In the evening a group of us, mainly women were having a few drinks in the lounge when the conversation turned to marriage and what sort of man the women would like to marry. I was amazed, most of the women had such high expectations, (and somewhat unrealistic) that they would have excluded 95% of the male population.

Having high expectations is a good thing but love and romance won't follow the rules of logic. You never know when cupid is going to fire that arrow right at your heart and Zap you! Anyone of those women could have walked out the door and fallen in love with the cab driver. One of them did fall in love, not with the cab driver but with the courier and they are still happily married, she became the high flyer business executive and he still drives his van.

Don't restrict yourself by putting too many conditions on the sort of person you would consider because you never know what's in store for you just round the corner. Keep an open mind.

Be honest, be positive, be specific, be yourself and have fun writing your profile. Hey if you're a twenty year old and you like Sinatra while those around you are getting off on 50 cent say so, you can tell a lot about a person form their choice of music. Write the best profile you can and get a friend, someone who knows you well, to go over it with you. Make sure you use a good photo and make sure it's you! Trying to trick people will catch up with you eventually.

Have a good look around before deciding on a dating site. There are many different sites. Teenage Dating, Adult dating, Christian dating to name a few.
